What To Expect At Your First Prolotherapy Visit
You will initially be scheduled for a new patient evaluation to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for Prolotherapy. At this visit, Dr. Duncan will review any pertinent medical records, diagnostic tests such as X-rays and MRIs, and evaluate your condition by doing a history and physical examination. If thought to be a candidate, she will discuss the rationale for Prolotherapy, the risks and benefits, and the alternatives to treatment. Time usually does not allow for treatment on the same day as the evaluation, thus you will be scheduled for treatment on a different day. However, since Dr. Duncan is only one of two Prolotherapy physicians listed in North Carolina, and many of our patients travel long distances, we will make some exceptions. Please let our staff know your situation at the time of scheduling and we will try to accommodate. Please be aware that treatment will only be provided if you are felt to be a candidate.
Depending on the treatment site, Prolotherapy may be done under fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance. The number of injections per session vary anywhere from 1 to 20 and can sometimes be painful. However, we will do our best to reduce your discomfort. The numbers of sessions also vary with the average being 4-6. These sessions are usually scheduled 2-6 weeks apart. We ask that you wear comfortable clothing and discontinue all anti-inflammatories 3 days prior and 10 days after each Prolotherapy session.
Unfortunately, Prolotherapy is not covered by Medicare and is rarely paid by other insurance. We can bill your insurance for the office visits only; however, all Prolotherapy treatments will be SELF-PAY. The cost of treatment depends on the site treated and we will be happy to give you an estimate at the time of scheduling.
